Lacey became interested in dog mushing when her second grade teacher introduced the IditaRead program. Each student chose a dog musher on the Iditarod—a 1,100 mile dog sled race in Alaska—and read one page for every mile their musher raced, attempting to beat him or her to the finish line.By the end of the program Lacey was hooked on dog mushing. She announced to her parents that she wished to become a dog musher, to which they replied, "No."
A deal was struck with her parents and after almost a year of waiting, she adopted her first sled dog. Shortly thereafter, she found an ad in the local paper advertising a team of 8 sled dogs. She contacted the owner and ended up striking a deal for 17 dogs and the needed harnesses, dog houses, sleds, and equipment. Being too young to run the Iditarod, Lacey set her sights on the Junior Iditarod, a 180 mile race for teens 14-17.
Dog Girl follows Lacey along on her journeys and misadventures as she learns what it means to be a musher and how to race and train sled dogs. Lacey shares some of her real-life experiences including losing her dog team after falling off her sled in the Absaroka Wilderness of Montana, to being run over by her own sled and dragged for miles in her first dog sled race.
The story culminates with Lacey running the Junior Iditarod at age fifteen, and winning the Humanitarian Award for best cared for dog team.
This is an inspirational read for children and adults everywhere.
